Design For Environment
Green Design
Decision making during the design process is a
critical for the achievement of environmental goals. It has been estimated that
70% or more of the life cycle cost of typical product is determined during the
design (USNRC,1991)
Designed is complicated and a premium on rapid
decision making
Preparation Assignment
Think about the environmental impact of the product
and services we use
Identify a product or service with reduce
environmental impact
Example of product :
-Patagonia Clothing
-Stokke Tripp Trapp Chair
-Dunlop Recycled Wellington Boots
-Freitag Bags
Environmental Impacts:
Global Warming,Resource Depletion,Solid Waste,Water
Pollution,Air Pollution,Land Degradation.
Design For Environment
Is a method to minimize or
eliminate environmental impacts of a product over it’s life cycle.
Life Cycle Assesment (LCA)
Life
Cycle Assessment:
A systematic set of procedures for compiling and examining the inputs and outputs of materials and energy and the associated environmental impacts directly attributable to the functioning of a product or service system throughout its life cycle.
A systematic set of procedures for compiling and examining the inputs and outputs of materials and energy and the associated environmental impacts directly attributable to the functioning of a product or service system throughout its life cycle.
Steps in LCA analysis :
- Prepare proposed design options
- - Identify life cycle,including recycling
and disposal
- - Identify all materials and energy
sources used
- - Identify outputs and waste streams
- - Quantify impacts of each
material,energy,waste
- - Aggregate impact into categories for
comparison
